On Saturday, April 20th, Henrys Fork Wildlife Alliance led a small group of participants on an expedition to watch a sage grouse lek north of the St. Anthony dunes.
Participants gathered at the crack of dawn to carpool out to observe the fascinating birds. The trip was guided by Logan Peterson, a sage-grouse expert from Idaho Fish and Game, in addition to HFWA’s very own biologist/program coordinator Caitlyn Wanner. Members of the group watched the lek from the comfort of a heated vehicle to maintain a safe distance so as not to disturb the birds.
“It was like nothing I had ever seen or heard before. It was so cool to watch these little birds do their thing to try and attract a hen. It was very unique!” said Shaun Ward, a communication coordinator with the Henrys Fork Wildlife Alliance.
After watching the lek, the group ate breakfast at El Jaliciense in St. Anthony and listened to a lecture given by Logan and Caitlyn. All in attendance joined in on a discussion over breakfast about sage-grouse and had any questions answered.
